Intro to some of our local farmers:
Port Madison Goat Farm
Fresh Chevre Brings Spring to the Table .Early March marks the beginning of goat cheese production season at Port Madison Goat Farm on Bainbridge Island. After a winter-long hiatus, Beverly Phillips begins milking her herd of 60+ goats twice a day, every day. Her husband Steve Phillips takes all of that lovely milk and transforms it into a variety of fresh and aged cheeses.
Fresh chevre (goat cheese) brings the essence of spring to the table. The Port Madison cheeses have nary a whiff of goatiness, so they play nice with almost everything. Simply crumble some chevre over a salad of fresh greens. Goat cheese and beets make magic together.
Camp 4, an Island Farm where Sustainable Living Comes naturally
Camp 4 is Jason and Kate Ruffing’s home and a “lab” for sustainable living. Since 2007, they have been raising chickens and ducks, keeping bees, and growing fruits and vegetables to feed their family. The Camp 4 ducks not only supply the Ruffings with fresh eggs, but serve as pesticide control in their gardens, eating slugs and other invasives, all while fertilizing the soil. Along with food, the Ruffings experiment with different sustainable products, solutions and practices to live a lifestyle with less impact. Their mission is to find a practical approach to sustainable living that can be adopted naturally into their busy lifestyle.Follow the Ruffing’s sustainable living adventures at www.camp4bi.com
